During the March 27 meeting of the Orange County commissioners, it was decided to appoint former Orange County Judge Carl Thibodeaux to hold the vacant position through the 2020 election. Thibodeaux previously served as county judge for 20 years and retired after his term ended in January 2015.

Kelly Daws speaks with her lawyer

UPDATE: Kelly Daws has been found guilty and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.  

A trial is underway for 47-year-old Kelly Daws, who allegedly conspired with her boyfriend, 48-year- old Joal Riley, to murder her estranged husband, ex- Port Arthur Police Officer Jerry Daws. This trial comes after Riley was sentenced to serve seven years for aggravated assault in May 2018, stemming from the stabbing of Officer Daws in December 2016.

A Beaumont woman pleaded guilty for evading arrest and child endangerment after a June 17, 2018, incident.

According to Jefferson County District Attorney information, a Beaumont police officer responding to a call for service spotted Chelsea Batiste, 24, traveling in a Dodge Challenger “at a very high rate of speed.” The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, which resulted in Batiste fleeing from the officer through the residential neighborhoods.

Following a short pursuit, Batiste pulled into a store located on Grand Ave. and was taken into custody.

On Sunday, March 24, Beaumont police officers responded to Baptist Hospital in reference to a shooting victim. Upon arriva, officers found the 33-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the face. 

A witness to the incident told officers Elkin Savoy, 44, of Beaumont, was responsible. The witness stated, the victim gave Savoy a ride to the 4800 block of Park Street. As they arrived, Savoy then shot him. The witness transported the victim to the hospital for treatment where he was immediately brought into surgery. The victim is now listed in stable condition.

On Saturday, March 23, at about 2:30 p..m., investigators with the Orange County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division initiated a traffic stop on a silver Toyota 4-Runner after witnessing several traffic violations near the intersection of Texas Avenue and Roberts in Bridge City. The driver was identified as Howard Jay Schab, 61, of Bridge City.

During an arrest inventory of the vehicle, OCSO investigators discovered approximately 41 grams of a black tar-like substance beleived to be black tar heroin located within the vehicle.
