Although U.S. Attorney Special Prosecutor Bob Rawls attempted to make Beaumont Independent School District contract electrician Calvin Walker forfeit employment with the school district, federal judge Ron Clark refused to make the stipulation part of Walker’s plea agreement with the court Dec. 12.

A hostage situation in Port Arthur ended peacefully after 28-year-old Walter Moore of Port Arthur took a 2-year-old captive and barricaded himself inside a home on the 2500 block of 61st Street.

The standoff began in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Dec. 12. By the time police arrived, Moore had closed the blinds, telling police he was heavily armed with his 2-year-old niece still inside.

When Jerry Marshall, 50, of Mauriceville made an agreement with his three sons that he would join the Vidor Taekwondo academy if all three boys earned their black belts, his sons never thought he would actually go through with it.

“I thought he was just talking,” Nathan Marshall said.

Nathan, Justin and Luke Marshall started Taekwondo training in 2006 and were black belts within two years.

Standing next to her budding winter garden of lettuce, collards, turnips and banana peppers, Ethel August pointed to the blue tarp on her roof and lamented.

“The roof is leaking real bad in the kitchen,” said August, whose home on Forrest Street still bears a sun-worn blue tarp more than four years after Hurricane Ike damaged her roof in September 2008.
