If you read this column on a regular basis, you may think this article is a contradiction compared to the one I wrote recently urging our readers not to quit. That writing had to do with not giving up, not letting go, trying one more time, and hanging in there. This week, I am urging us to quit some things. Life is a complex mixture of hanging in there and being wise enough to know when to let go of things that hold us back, and in some cases, people who hinder our progress and happiness.

The Anahuac High School Engineering Design High Altitude Rocket Team traveled to Whites Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to attempt to launch their rocket project. The goal of the project is to launch up to a 35-pound payload to 100,000 feet in altitude.

Young people in the United Methodist Action Reach-out Ministry by Youth (UM ARMY) from the Richmond/Rosenberg area southwest of Houston this year performed their annual one-week summer volunteer outreach camp in Southeast Texas. Included were 23 ninth graders, 14 tenth graders, 19 eleventh graders, 16 twelfth graders, 6 college-aged youth leaders and 53 adults.

United Methodist mission outreach has sign-ups each spring. Corporate offices of UM ARMY have connections in communities to find homes needing assistance.

James Evans, Big Bend photographer, comes to the McFaddin-Ward House sharing his wit, humor, and life’s work capturing images of the formidable national park in South Texas on Thursday, July 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. Evans fell in love with Big Bend on a hiking trip 28 years ago, so he set up camp … permanently. He’s been taking stunning pictures ever since, has authored two books, and finally got married this year.
