Lamar University has named Juan Zabala executive director of the Lamar University Foundation, officials announced.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Larry Gilder was given the 2013 East Texas Peace Officer Association’s (ETPOA) “Outstanding Peace Officer of the Year Award” at the 62nd Annual ETPOA Training Convention Awards Banquet on Tuesday, June 25, at the John D.

Two Lamar Institute of Technology students earned medals at the National SkillsUSA Competition held June 24-28 in Kansas City, Mo.

Kenneth Ross, a utility line technology student, earned a silver medal in job skill demonstration open. In this contest, competitors demonstrate and explain an entry-level job skill. His advisor was Rusty Koenig, program director of utility line technology.


At least three train cars derailed after a flaw in a new set of tracks gave way. 

According to port workers on the scene, moments after the track gave way about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 4, three grain cars halfway through a lengthy train jumped their tracks and ended up on their sides behind the Beaumont Civic Center.
