Port Arthur Police Department announced Friday, Jan. 4, that multiple K-9 units will be joining their ranks. While the department already has five dual-purposeK-9s, meaning trained to detect narcotics and assist officers in biting and holding suspects, and one narcotic dog amongst them, they have plans to purchase three more dual-purpose dogs and one narcotic K-9. Three of the new dogs are planned to be trained and in service by the end of the month with the fourth coming in late March.

A man Nederland police believe responsible for shooting his estranged girlfriend on Dec. 21 is in custody at the Jefferson County Correction Facility..

David Whittington Jr, 48, reportedly went to a Department of Public Safety office in Chambers County on Jan. 3 and turned himself in on Jan. 3. He was transported to Jefferson County.

UPDATE: As of 4 p.m., the Orange County Office of Emergency Management reported gates have been opened to four feet.

Eleven of the Sabine River flood gates have been opened to three feet, according to Orange County Office of Emergency Management, and low-lying areas along the river are expected to flood. In response to the Sabine River Authority's action, Newton County Judge Kenneth Weeks issued a declaration of disaster on Jan. 3.
