A 24-year-old Mexico native was sentenced to prison in Jefferson County on Feb. 29 for the murder of 25-year-old Port Arthur resident Denzel Washington. Jose Julio Esquivel was sentenced to 40 years for Washington’s murder, 20 years for a separate aggravated assault and 20 years for burglary of a habitation, all to run concurrently.

Darrell Mason of Port Arthur, the father of abused infant Faith Mason, received 25 years for injury to a child Feb. 29, after pleading guilty to the charge Jan. 15. Criminal District Court Judge John Stevens sentenced Mason to the maximum time allowed by a plea agreement the defendant made with prosecutors.

Primary elections are over, and the electorate has spoken. Approximately 29 percent of registered voters cast ballots in Jefferson County (42,141 of 144,998), effectively choosing who will represent their parties on Election Day in November — for the most part. Some races were too close to call a clear winner, so a few candidates will face opponents in runoff elections coming in May.
