A local nonprofit reaching out to those with substance abuse issues and the mentally ill, educating children about mental illness, promoting awareness, encouraging availability of mental health services and protecting those affected by mental illness, Mental Health America of Southeast Texas has provided assistance to numerous individuals in the area for more than 50 years.

Sunbean is no longer king of the Louisiana-bred horses. Previously undefeated at Delta Downs with a 4-for-4 record, the 5-year-old was beaten soundly by One King’s Man in the $200,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship at Delta Downs on Feb. 7.

National Signing Day has come and gone, and once again, many athletes from Southeast Texas will be headed to their respective colleges to continue playing sports while also getting an education.

Starting in Beaumont, West Brook High School had six players sign a National Letter of Intent to play college football, and two will stay close to home. Offensive lineman Ethan Cothen and tight end Sam McGee will play at Lamar.

The Lamar Cardinals football team signed 23 high school standouts to National Letters of Intent and added three transfers. In one of the more balanced signing classes since the return of the program, the Cardinals brought in a wealth of talent on both sides of the ball. The 2015 class consists of 13 defensive players, 13 on the offensive side of the ball, and one athlete – Southlake Carroll product Tariq Gordon – comes to Beaumont listed as a receiver and defensive back.
