It’s a weekend full of fine arts events from Lamar University beginning with the Concert Band & Wind Ensemble Concert on Friday, April 21, at Silsbee High School (1575 Highway 96 N.) at 7:30 p.m.

The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music will present the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Scott Deppe, director of bands, and Concert Band, under the direction of Eric Shannon, director of athletic bands, in a combined concert. This is the final band concert for Deppe, who will retire this summer.

International comedy/ventriloquist sensation Jeff Dunham will perform at Ford Arena on Sunday, April 23, with an afternoon showtime of 3 p.m. The Perfectly Unbalanced Tour will feature his cast of characters, which includes the puppets Walter, Peanut, José Jalapeño on a Stick and others.

Lamar State College-Orange will present the Distinguished Lecture Series at Lutcher Theater on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. This year’s distinguished guest is Emmy Award winning author and biologist Jeff Corwin.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Country music star and Beaumont native Mark Chesnutt brought a breath of fresh air to the current state of the clogged up Country music scene on April 14 when he played a plethora of his hits to a packed Grand Event Center located inside the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles.

"Country music nowadays, you can't tell from one person to the next, it all sounds the same," Chesnutt told the audience. "I'm here to play some real Country music. So if you don't want to hear real Country music, you might want to leave." Not a single person moved.
