One of the best Po’boys in Southeast Texas can be found in one of the most unlikely of places.

Head to Port Arthur to Gulfway Drive. Go one block past Ninth Avenue across from the old Sabine bank to Amuny’s Liquor & Deli.

As cooler temperatures and falling leaves take over the balmy South, so does the spirit of Halloween. Decoration and costume shops are reanimating dead strip centers. Homes and offices are sporting cobwebs and ghosts — both fixtures normally frowned upon in most places, but openly encouraged as the holiday nears.

As a boy, our house was not blessed with air conditioning. Most of our neighbors’ homes were the same. Our families were mostly refinery working-hand dads and stay-at-home moms. Most of us have long since become immune to the pungent odors produced by the various industries surrounding Port Arthur. Some, however, did not.

The archery season on deer is open for the entire month of October, and once again bowhunters will be allowed to use both crossbows and compound bows in most Texas counties. The only county not allowing crossbows is Grayson.

The big question is what can hunters expect to see, now that we’re in the middle of the worst drought in Texas history? Without a doubt, white-tailed deer in Texas are facing tough conditions heading into the fall hunting season.

With all of the weather related occurrences in our natural habitat in the last few months, folks are beginning to wonder if some of those old Bible prophecies might be more than just fodder for Sunday sermons by rambling old preachers of the gospel. Several dear friends of mine who have no more than a passing interest in religion, church or gathering with other believers have found the time to ask me what I think about them, and more importantly, what I think might be coming in our future.
