Rumors swirled last year that Saliva would be no more. The once Grammy-nominated and platinum recording rockers that gave us hits such as “Your Disease,” “Click Click Boom,” “Always” and “Ladies and Gentlemen” would end its 15-year run after singer Josey Scott left the band at the end of 2011.

In a year when movie attendance was at its lowest, so is my interest in Oscar, despite the good news that Billy Crystal will host the show. More than ever, this evening devoted to film excellence is becoming a popularity contest, and all attempts to correct the course are failing. The addition of five more films in the Best Picture category, a move designed to be more inclusive of popular films, only succeeds in omissions in that the Best Director category still limited to five nominees. Case in point: “The Help” received a nomination but director Tate Taylor didn’t.

Thrill car racing is just a video game away.

This week, I had the pleasure of getting into the driver’s seat with an expert on car racing video games, a 9-year-old third-grader who has been a car enthusiast since he could talk. When it comes to video game playing, he plays car-racing games almost exclusively. His collection of racing games is so extensive that we could only compare his favorite five.

Beaumont, Texas – Habitat for Humanity will host its annual fundraiser, Mr. Habitat, Saturday, February 25 at the Holiday Inn & Suites Beaumont Plaza on Walden Road beginning at 6:30 p.m. Seven male contestants are vying for the Mr. Habitat title through a series of fun competitions.

It’s been three months since the Beaumont Independent School District sent 82 employees to New Orleans for the National Alliance of Black School Educators conference and all of the records have still not been reconciled properly or made available for inspection.

A review of several hundred pages of documents made available to The Examiner has raised serious questions about what is permitted and paid for on a school-sanctioned trip. Some BISD board members are calling the trip an “all-expenses-paid vacation,” and that might be what it was.
