An obvious fan letter to the golden age of Hollywood — or pretty close to it — this won’t go down as one of the best Coen Brothers movies, but it is a lot of silly fun. Set in the ’50s at the fictitious Capitol Pictures, all of the genres popular to the big studios during that era are represented in grand style with tongue firmly pressed against cheek.

You can’t ask for better gumbo weather. It’s the perfect time for the 22nd annual Girls’ Haven Gumbo Festival, set for Saturday, Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., once again held in the Parkdale Mall parking lot.

There will be plenty of activities for the kids, including a special performance by the one and only Sonny “The Bird Man,” an expanded kids area including carnival games, bounce houses and much more.

Did we mention gumbo?

Ginger, 4-month old Corgi mix puppy

You will fall for Ginger in a snap! This cute cookie is a 4-month old, 11-pound Corgi mix pup. Ginger’s owners surrendered her to our shelter because they did not want to housetrain a puppy. This takes a little patience and creativity! She has a beautiful golden-blond, medium-length coat, and cute, fluffy tufts of fur on her ears. She most likely will remain a fairly small dog. Ginger is affectionate and fun to cuddle. She is as playful and fun as any pup could be.
