The Jefferson County Go Texan committee is heading to the World’s Championship Barbecue Contest on Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27, at NRG Stadium in Houston.

This group of volunteers promotes the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at the county level and has been involved with the event since 1972 as one of the original counties to participate in the Go Texan program.

This year’s honorees are Iris and Jerry Nathan.

It’s been 33 years and counting, but rest assured the annual “Taste of the Triangle” is far from stale. In fact, this year’s event sponsored by the Sabine Area Restaurant Association will feature a few fresh faces along with the time-honored traditions associated with the area’s premiere foodie event.


Classic Movie Night continues with the 1976 monster film King Kong on Friday, Feb. 5 at the historic Jefferson Theatre in downtown Beaumont.

Directed by John Guillermin, this film is a remake of the 1933 classic starring Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin and Jessica Lange. An exploration for oil leads to an isolated island inhabited by a monster gorilla who is captured and taken to New York City for display.

Competition barbecue and “regular” barbecue. Although some folks cook at competitions the same way they cook in their backyards and/or restaurants, the competitors at the highest levels certainly do things differently.

Competition barbecue is often referred to as “one bite barbecue” because the judges typically take one bite and competitors are challenged to insert the most flavor and dynamic taste in that one portion. Judges typically taste dozens of samples during a competition, and the winner must stand out in a very crowded field.
