Lamer University students helped lead the way to Texas-sized bragging rights over Louisiana in the recent Bassmaster College Series Shootout on the Red River.

I started writing a Father’s Day column, but somehow in my mind, and with my fingers on the keys, I ended up with thoughts of my grandfathers, the two men that loved me without reserve, judgment, or ill will. Carl Henry Cannon and Marshal Eli Cole both loved me with wild abandon and made me know I was special to them. Every child needs that, and I was blessed to have it from two men that were as opposite as any two could have ever been. Granddaddy Cannon was fun and filled with mischief, and he laughed a lot. In fact, he laughed so much that his face had creases just from the smiles.

So many runners … The City of Beaumont hosted the first Calder Twilight 5K Run/Walk this past weekend with more than 700 participants taking part in this family fun event. The course circled the Historic District ending in front of Rao’s Bakery. First-place male Drew Bean and firstplace female Jordan Wellborn were thrilled with the terrific times and trophies.

The wonderful Aggie Superstar group called “Woody Shrubs” might have just what you are looking for among its choices. These are plants chosen by horticulturists all over Texas for their drought-tolerance, lack of disease issues and beauty, among other things.
