Still standing and blooming at the end of July, but what is it? Phlox is one of the heroes in your yard just about now. You can pick the flowers at their best just after the dew dries on the morning of their first bloom.

Thanks to a flood of rain water heading down the Neches and Sabine rivers, fishing on Sabine Lake is going to take a direct hit, meaning slower fishing. However, a good place to find both trout and reds will be along the Gulf side of the jetties, and at the short rigs. Fishing jigs around the rigs, anywhere from a half mile to 7 miles off the Sabine jetties, has been a good way to catch some pretty good numbers of trout.

This second feature from the “Scrubs” guy show more depth than his first attempt, “Garden State,” which is an improvement — but there is room for more. Zach Braff, who wrote this script with his brother Adam, also directs and stars in this as Aidan Bloom, an out-of-work actor married with two children. His wife, Sarah (Kate Hudson), works at a menial city job so Aidan can continue to pursue his dream of acting, but his last job was a dandruff commercial months ago, and the future is not looking good.

Five performances are left for the Tony Award-winning musical The Producers at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, in conjunction with Port Arthur Little Theatre. Dates for this sly and hilarious musical are July 25-26 and Aug. 1-2 at 7:30 p.m., and July 27 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and students at other schools. LSC-PA students, faculty and staff are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased at the door, and credit cards will be accepted.
