Red, White and Wow! … Lamar University President James Simmons earned another elite honor with induction into the Phi Beta Mu Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame at the latest Texas Bandmasters Association annual convention in San Antonio. In selecting Simmons to become part of the Hall of Fame 2012 class, the international bandmasters fraternity continues its tradition of honoring outstanding Texas band directors. Simmons was thrilled to observe that the honor puts him in the record books with his mentors and up for recognition by his peers.

Enough of wondering if this delightful new movie from Wes Anderson is going to come to local theaters — just be glad it is within driving distance because it’s worth the trip.


“Pleasant” is the very first word that comes to mind when you have an enjoyable visit and delicious meal with the Millers at Pine Tree Lodge in LaBelle. First fun thing that happened on our recent visit was that the lady’s voice in our GPS kept repeating “label” for the word “LaBelle,” but we arrived just the same after checking the various directions given for the scenic restaurant along the banks of Taylor Bayou in Southeast Texas.

If no one turned out last weekend to watch “The Watch,” don’t blame the wall-to-wall coverage of the Olympics. There just wasn’t much to see. This is not a total disaster, but it comes close.
