It will be a weekend of revving up on the river during the 11th annual “Showdown on the Sabine” featuring more than 60 tunnel boat racers from the Southern Professional Outboard Racing Tour on Sept. 14-16 at the City of Orange Boat Ramp (1000 Simmons Dr.).

“This particular event is one that I honestly look forward to each and every year,” said Brandy Judice, Orange Convention & Visitors Bureau coordinator. “It’s action packed and fun all weekend long.”

Rose of Sharon is such a heat-loving beauty that I can’t help but admire her this time of year.  She not only gives you beautiful flowers but flowers with height.  Another plus for Rose of Sharon is that she blooms later in the summer than some other summer standbys, which have long since given up flowering because of the heat.

The official name of our hardy bloomer in the U.S. is “Hibiscus syriacus.”  Most Americans can easily find this deciduous shrub in whites, pinks and lavenders.

The football season will unofficially open for the Lamar University football team Sunday, Aug. 26 with their annual Football Kickoff Celebration. This year’s keynote speaker is football legend “Little” Joe Washington.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. in the Montagne Center with a VIP reception featuring Washington, LU head football coach Mike Schultz and Director of Athletics Marco Born. That will be followed by general admission to the event at 6 p.m. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the Cardinal football team.

The romantic comedy genre has been overdue for a makeover and in this fresh new take is just the ticket. Easily, it’s one of the most entertaining movies I’ve seen this summer as it carries a great storyline while allowing entry into a culture I knew virtually nothing about.

Think of a storyline as a branch, with elements of the story hung like ornaments from it. Then think of the brightest, most colorful ornaments and that is “Crazy Rich Asians,” from start to finish.
