For over 70 years and under various names, the Shorkey Center has offered educational and therapeutic services for children with special needs.

This year marks their 25th annual holiday card campaign, which executive director Araina Daniels said is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers.

“Profits from our … sales are used to offset the cost of high quality therapy services [given] to deserving students who otherwise may not be able to afford it,” Daniels said.

Courville's caters many food items

Big Rich Courville’s name is synonymous with everything that is good and that tastes good in Southeast Texas. If you lived in a box, odds are you would still know who he is because most likely, by gift or by commerce, he has fed you at some point.

Storms, floods, charity auctions, fundraisers or perhaps at his venue on College, Big Rich Courville, it seems, is always there for us. Now it’s our turn and time to remember those who are always here for us when we need them by supporting our local businesses.

Today we hear a lot about “fake news.” It appears that at least from the Washington sector, fake news is most often described as any news unfavorable to those in power. Our country’s, founders such as Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams and others, made it abundantly clear that part of the essential lifeblood of a free democratic society is free speech, along with a free and independent news media.
