Southeast Texas is special place in the Lone Star State. Combining the culture of Texas with the roots of a Cajun population, Southeast Texas is truly unique and Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp reflects that unique identity. Mixing Tex-Mex and Cajun food to create Mexi-Cajun food. Tia Juanita’s offers three locations all consistently offering its unique take on taste, starting in Beaumont with a second location in Lumberton and third location in Jasper. Its Lumberton location is truly something very special for their community.

Rose of Sharon is such a heat-loving beauty that I can’t help but admire her this time of year.  She not only gives you beautiful flowers but flowers with height.  Another plus for Rose of Sharon is that she blooms later in the summer than some other summer standbys, which have long since given up flowering because of the heat.

The official name of our hardy bloomer in the U.S. is “Hibiscus syriacus.”  Most Americans can easily find this deciduous shrub in whites, pinks and lavenders.

The morning light guides you to the water, dressed in gloves, a long-sleeved shirt and tall rubber boots. You make this trek with a sieve extended by a long pole in hand as you collect snails, ranging in size from half-an-inch to an inch long, being careful to not expose yourself to parasitic flatworms that infest the waters. This is just another morning of summer vacation for Lamar University junior biology major Emily McCall of Orangfield, who spent two weeks performing field research in Kenya.
