Calder Place invites us all to annual parade

Patriotic parade … The Calder Place annual Fourth of July Parade will take place again this year come rain or shine on Monday, July 4. Anyone and everyone is invited to watch or participate in the annual event. All the fun begins at 8:30 a.m., leaving the BISD Administration Building parking lot heading west on North Street, turning right on 22nd and then east on Harrison Street back to the parking lot where it began. Refreshments and awards will be given for the “best of” at the conclusion of the parade route. Everyone is encouraged to come decked out in red, white and blue.

Independence Monday means a week off for some

Vacationville … Proprietors at the marvelous Mildred Building including the Book Bazaar, Caves Interiors, Katharine & Co. and One Vase will be closed beginning July 4 through July 8. Finders Fayre will close July 4 but remain open the rest of the week. Mark Lowe and Above All Photography are open by appointment only. The first week in August welcomes the next exciting First Thursday (actually Aug. 4) at the Mildred, so mark your calendars for all the wonderful wares that will be on sale that evening.

BBB carries a ‘Torch’ for retiring president

Lighting the torch … Anderson Ford Mercury in Cleveland and Operation Refuge Inc. of Cleveland are the winners of the 2011 Torch Awards for Marketplace Trust presented May 10 by the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Texas during its 14th annual awards presentation. The BBB Consumer Education Foundation Inc. made a $10,000 contribution to continue funding endowed Better Business Bureau College of Business scholarships at Lamar University, bringing total contributions for the past 14 years to $140,000.
