A Saturday night dinner date with my husband turned out to be a fun night at El Potrillo Mexican Restaurant in Beaumont. The brightly lit, festive atmosphere was the first thing to draw us into the cheery, comfortable and conveniently located eatery on the Eastex Freeway. Once inside, we found friendly servers and management, and very good food. When the salsa and chips were delivered to our table, we knew we were in good hands.

Understanding the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ kinds

My 15-year-old grandson and I had an interesting discussion one recent afternoon when he was visiting with me in my home. Papa Ted was in Amarillo taking care of some business, and Brendan asked me about the word “pride.” From our conversation and giving the subject some thought, I have decided that it is indeed a difficult word to completely understand and control, and an even more difficult one to explain to a teen who was genuinely interested in knowing the answers to his questions.

K, I’m officially hooked. I traveled to Lumberton to taste what many have said are the best hamburgers in our area, and we weren’t disappointed. But the thing that won me over was Leah Sligar’s famous homemade “butt rolls” at Dippity’s.

I started writing a Father’s Day column, but somehow in my mind, and with my fingers on the keys, I ended up with thoughts of my grandfathers, the two men that loved me without reserve, judgment, or ill will. Carl Henry Cannon and Marshal Eli Cole both loved me with wild abandon and made me know I was special to them. Every child needs that, and I was blessed to have it from two men that were as opposite as any two could have ever been. Granddaddy Cannon was fun and filled with mischief, and he laughed a lot. In fact, he laughed so much that his face had creases just from the smiles.

The sneak peak into Elise Griffin’s playhouse in Winnie on Saturday, June 9, gave kids from Buckner Children and Family Services, and Boys’ Haven and Girls’ Haven of Beaumont, members of the local media, and family and friends of the savvy 7-year-old a fun time. New toys caught the eyes, ears and hearts of the attendees and left them with a hope of returning soon.
