The Bible covers so many interesting topics and, from time to time, I receive questions about what a certain verse or phrase might mean. I always am intrigued when I study the question and try to determine what I feel the Scripture is saying. I received an interesting one this past week: “What does it mean in the Book of Matthew when we are told to shake the dust off of our feet?”

I am a planner, somewhat of an organizer, appreciate things done on time and in an efficient manner, and like to know where I am headed in my daily chores, in my work, in travel, having fun, and in life in general. As this year comes to a close and we are set to begin a new one, I have been giving thought to where I am in life and what I want accomplish in the coming months. I still have goals, plans and dreams at 74 years of age, and believe that as long as I am alive, I should be reaching for them with every ounce of my being.

The big week is almost here, and for me, it is a big week indeed. My birthday is Dec. 23, and then we have the blessed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For those of us celebrating a different kind of Christmas this year for whatever reason, please let me assure you with confidence that God knows all about each of our Christmases and what we will have and what we will not have.

A bouquet made of 100 roses, with one for each year of Connie Dickinson’s life

Connie Dickinson, volunteer extraordinaire, had a big day Tuesday, Oct. 18. She reached her 100th birthday and celebrated for several days with friends and coworkers.

Monday, the day before her special day, Vickie Holcombe, director of Volunteer Services at Baptist Beaumont Hospitals, staff, volunteers, patients and guests joined together to honor Connie on one of her regular volunteer days at the hospital.

It is no big secret to those who know me well that my biological mother and I did not get along. There were many reasons, and looking back on them now that I am older and have grown children of my own, I see more of the complications that caused the often very turbulent waters. Some changes and a lot of understanding could have been made easier for all of us had I known then what I know now. Such is life.
