a few hours into the popular Moulin Rouge, patterned after the 2001 jukebox musical film directed, produced and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. This one-of-a-kind gala, black-tie event benefits the Baptist Cancer Center of Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas. The La Soiree committee is busy putting all of the finishing touches on the event planned for Jan. 28, and it’s sure to be a fashionable and fun happening.

Driving to 1147 Boston Ave. in Nederland provided a surprise like no other encountered on recent assignments. Arriving at my destination, a new restaurant, Finch Hutton, I had no idea what to expect. A gracious welcome to our party by an attentive staff impressed me right off the bat, but when I saw the menu offered at this French-American bistro, shock is a mild word to describe my feelings.

One of the sad things about being a legend in a local area, even for a star with a national reputation, is that often those who are nearby don’t know what you’ve done. That may be true for someone like the truly legendary Barbara Lynn, an amazing woman in her own right who has toured with many big stars in her storied professional career.

How refreshing to find a true charity working to reach anyone who needs their help. But what happens when those who help others find themselves in need? If they are fortunate and blessed like the St. Vincent de Paul Society, members of the community step up and see that their needs are met, and not only met but exceeded because these folks believe in what the organization in Winnie does for others.
