Southeast Texans are connoisseurs when it comes to gumbo. Ask anyone who the award-winning cook is in their family, office or church group and you’ll get 10 different reasons why their favorite is the best. The folks at Girls’ Haven take tasting and enjoying the Southeast Texas staple to the limit. Come on out and enjoy the best gumbo on the planet Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the parking lot at Parkdale Mall in Beaumont in front of Macy’s and behind Logan’s.

For several years of my Christian life, I wrestled with what God would have me to do concerning reaching others. I had heard sermons and read material teaching that I should be a witness for Him, and that if I really loved Him as I should, I would be eager to talk to folks about their eternal souls. I wasn’t. I was chicken. I was downright petrified. I was fearful that I would offend and possibly lose a friendship that I valued. Because of my work, I knew many different kinds of people, and my family members were pretty much like me and not into church things.

What better way to celebrate Fat Tuesday this year than by attending one of the most anticipated events in all of Southeast Texas? The Sabine Area Restaurant Association will be putting on quite a show with the largest number of booths ever for a tasting in this area. Ford Park Exhibit Hall is the site once again for this amazing gathering of locals who cook, and more importantly, of those who like to taste the tempting morsels offered.
