My father was never able to finish high school, having to drop out to help feed the family. Nevertheless, he taught me many valuable lessons that have stuck with me over the years. One of his sayings was, “You can’t borrow your way out of debt.”

There has been much discussion concerning the recently adopted tax measure by our Congress. Our president claims he has given us all a great Christmas present. The question is, has he given us a valuable gift, or a lump of coal?

1940 by Susan Dunn

I have recently finished reading a book by Susan Dunn titled “1940.” It’s basically about political events occurring in the year before Franklin Roosevelt ran for a third term. Much of the book is about attitudes concerning Nazi Germany’s conquest of Europe and the concerns of Americans about getting in – or staying out of – the conflict. Though I have read quite a bit from that historical period, it is still somewhat shocking to revisit the history of how involved Germany was in trying to influence American opinion and politics.

Several years ago, I had a friend who was a great golfer. In fact, for many years he held the course record on one of the municipal courses here in Port Arthur. My friend was given to entering serious golf tournaments around East Texas and once told me a story about what happened to him upon entering a tournament in Center, Texas.

Following recent mass murders, conservative politicians have rushed to the scene to show sympathy. And there has also been a great deal of criticism of politicians who arrive and offer only thoughts and prayers for the survivors of the killings. As a person of faith, I certainly believe that there is a great deal to be said for offering prayers of comfort. The problem arises, though, when prayers and good thoughts are the only thing offered by politicians.
