Diets are absolutely no fun. Whether it’s forced upon you or it’s your New Year’s Resolution — no fun. And the older you get, the harder it is to drop some weight. But as a living testimony, I’m here to tell you it can be done, and to the tune of 51 pounds in 5 months.

The less fortunate in Beaumont rely heavily on the many programs Some Other Place has to offer. Founded in 1968 by the local religious community to address the unmet emergency needs of local residents, Some Other Place was created to give people looking for assistance somewhere to turn when they were told by other entities to go to “some other place” for relief.

Now, Some Other Place will turn to the community for help at the 15th annual A Tasting for Some Other Place fundraiser Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 5-7 p.m.

Many who enjoyed dining in downtown Beaumont at the Quality Café were more than sad when it officially closed for the last time in 2014. Some went every day to 730 Liberty St., and those who still talk about the tasty meals always mention the Thursday special — spaghetti and meatballs.

Get those taste buds ready because on Tuesday, July 25, from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. at J. Wilson’s will be the return of the Café’s spaghetti and meatballs cooked by Cheri Parigi herself, who last owned the restaurant in 2014.

Las Vegas continues to dazzle me, no matter how many times a year I get to visit the entertainment mecca of the world. Whether it’s a week stay, a short weekend, or two-day mid-week trip, there’s something for everyone on any day. Though my recent trip was supposed to be three full days, it turned into just two because of flight cancellation due to weather. We made the best of the situation and spent nearly all 48 hours outside the room.

It’s a free concert and fireworks celebration as the Orange Convention & Visitors Bureau hosts its annual Fourth of July celebration Tuesday, July 4, at the Riverfront Boardwalk & Pavilion (601 W. Division) in downtown Orange.

Beginning at 5 p.m., vendors will line the area, offering food, drinks and snow cones as well as plenty of children’s activities. The sky will light up with fireworks at 9 p.m.
