When someone mentions the history of music in Southeast Texas, specifically Beaumont, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the Beaumont Boys, which include Mark Chesnutt, Clay Walker and Tracy Byrd. But it’s much more than just those three talented players, and local concert promoter Johnae Whitaker has put together a gem of a gig to showcase the local talent in Southeast Texas called the OurTyme Music Festival on Saturday, June 24, at the Red Room (near Dixie Dance Hall) on Crockett Street in downtown Beaumont.

What I hoped would be a yummy art house feature to relieve a long, hot summer fell far short of my expectations. Allow me to save you a needless trip to a Houston cinema to see “My Cousin Rachel” when you can just wait for cable pay-per-view. I’ll wager it will be available by August.

Although he’s still a young 31 years of age, Tan “Ro” Phung is no stranger to the restaurant business. Phung, originally from Vietnam, came to the States as a baby. He opened Ro’s Seafood in 2008 with his sister Nhi Phung before opening Noah’s Seafood Kitchen in Vidor in 2012.

Phung named the restaurant after his nephew, Noah. Also, Phung’s relatives own Bruce’s Seafood Deli and Gulf Coast Seafood in Port Arthur.

Summer doesn’t officially start until June 20, but as the air outside heats up, so does the local and regional concert calendar. From monster arena shows to outdoor pavilions and pool parties on down to small clubs, the 2017 summer lineup looks to have plenty of variety for music lovers of all kinds.

Beaumont has plenty to look forward to, especially at the downtown venues, as Texas country artists Bruce Robinson and brother Charlie perform on the “My Brother & Me Acoustic Tour” at the Jefferson Theatre on Thursday, July 13, with tickets starting at $25.
