Jan. 10, 1901, the Lucas Gusher blew in on a hill just south of Beaumont. The public is invited to celebrate the 116th anniversary Saturday, Jan. 7, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown at 5550 Jimmy Simmons Blvd. near Lamar University.

The Houston International Boat, Sport & Travel Super Show is set for NRG Center in Houston from Jan. 6-15. It’s largest indoor show for outdoor sports in America featuring over 1,000 boats and RVs, plus hundred of fishing, sport, travel, outdoor gear and even art exhibits.

Show hours are Jan. 6 (1-8 p.m.), Jan. 7-10 (11 a.m. – 8 p.m.), Jan. 11-12 (1-8 p.m.), Jan. 13 (1-9 p.m.), Jan. 14 (11 a.m. – 9 p.m.) and Jan. 15 (11 a.m. – 5 p.m.).

The Mardi Gras season makes its flamboyant entrance with the Twelfth Night Parade Extravaganza inside the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum on Friday, Jan. 6, with doors opening at 6 p.m.

Annie Davis Orchard

Artist Annie Davis Orchard will host a closing reception for her retrospective Thursday, Jan. 5, from 5-9 p.m. at Finder’s Fayre Antiques, 1485 Calder in Beaumont.

“It has been quite an opportunity to show a collection of my work that spans my life over a period of time,” Orchard said. “My work progresses. I am never finished. My art keeps changing and evolving. This is great chance for subtle shifts and twists as the art changes its form.”
