The Art Studio will host Positive/Negative Space, an exhibition of photographs by The Studio’s “Darkroom Friends,” from March 4-24. In this digital age, a group of like-minded individuals are stepping back in time to create works in an old-fashioned style. Techniques on display will include silver gelatin, albumin and tintypes.

Since we didn’t have much of a winter in Southeast Texas, what better time than now for some ice cream. How about a new flavor from Blue Bell?

Feb. 24, Blue Bell announces it’s newest flavor — Ice Cream Cone. The tasty treat is vanilla ice cream loaded with dark chocolate-coated cone pieces, chopped roasted peanuts and surrounded by a chocolate sundae sauce swirl.

That’s a wrap, although not without an unprecedented bit of controversy when the wrong envelope was, well … if you don’t know by now. Then you probably don’t care. Let’s just say it was a moment that will live on in Oscar history for all the wrong reasons. To recap: Casey Affleck, despite some last minute scandals involving sexual harassment suits, held off Denzel Washington in the Best Actor category. The other big ones went as predicted, right up to “La La Land” being announced as Best Picture.

A highly anticipated event on the crowded festival calendar arrives in Mid-County on March 14. The 44th annual Nederland Heritage Festival welcomes 100,000 friends and neighbors through March 19 for an annual outpouring of fun, entertainment, music, crafts and carnival rides, as well as a delicious array of fair food.

The 25th annual Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas will be bigger and better than ever when the festivities kick off on Thursday, Feb. 23, and last through the weekend ending Sunday, Feb. 26. All the festivities take place in downtown Port Arthur.

There’s plenty of food with more than 40 vendors, which include pork kabobs, corn dogs, pizza, funnel cakes, burgers, anything on a stick and of course plenty of pistolettes.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Thursday and the first parade will be the Lamar State College Port Arthur Parade that starts at the Carl Parker Center.
