The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Association is hosting the fifth annual “Cops Helping Kids” Saltwater Fishing Tournament on July 25 and 26 at the Dick Dowling State Park in Sabine Pass, and they need help to meet their fundraising goal of $100,000.

One of the most joyful blooms you find in the summer are those of the hibiscus. They can be dramatic. Some of the hundreds of varieties will grow flowers as large as a child’s head. Now lets talk color! Look for hibiscus in all shades of pink from soft to hot, shades of red, white, yellow, peach, purple and orange.

Having written for a living for more years than I care to remember, I am still amazed at how the dear Lord puts things in my path, brings subjects to my mind, or has someone ask a question that gives me the idea for the next column. There are days when I sit in my lovely office staring at the computer screen wondering what words are going to magically appear for me to send off to one of the editors I call my friends. I am blessed.

The dog days of summer are upon us, and with them come scorching heat and humidity so high it feels like the air itself is sweating! Southeast Texans are all too familiar with the rising temperatures from early May until late September, but while basking in the icy-cold blast of the air conditioning, remember your pets also need escape from the sweltering sun.

If you look in your closet, you might be able to tell what your favorite colors are. Have you ever thought about using your favorite colors in the planning of your backyard? Love blue? A patch of blue in a container on your patio could make your morning brighter. Love orange? Why not place a huge orange bougainvillea outside of your kitchen window? Color is the most noticeable feature in most of our yards, so why not make it a color that you love?
