Since it’s springtime and there are so many super outdoor happenings available, I’ll offer a potpourri of choices. Any one or more of them would be a good choice.

My last two columns have been written with an eye toward a subject that has garnered much attention in the past few weeks. From media newscasts, radio broadcasts, special speakers and pastors and teachers, we have been hearing about the historic events unfolding more quickly with each day and night we live. One lady said to me on Sunday at my church that watching the national news at night was like listening to her old pastor preach many years ago.

WASHINGTON — I settled my ample figure into a dark leather booth in the Caucus Room steakhouse and confronted a pressing question: W.W.H.E?

What Would Haley Eat?

Haley Barbour, the Mississippi governor and prospective Republican presidential candidate, was a founder and owner of this sanctum sanctorum of the Washington powerful. Waiters told me he favored the chopped salad — off menu, natch — and another informant indicated he preferred light liquors.

There has long been a tradition of wintertime crappie fishing at the Chicken Coop on Toledo Bend reservoir. That area is north of Milam off Highway 87. There are, however, some really productive crappie fishing areas on not only Toledo Bend but also Sam Rayburn and Lake Livingston. Our local bayous were once very productive crappie fishing waters, but I have no reports since Hurricane Ike’s saltwater surge.

Seedling or seeds? Which is the best choice for your garden? It’s certainly easier to plant a vegetable garden by buying little plants and placing them gently into rich soil with your own green thumbs. Some seeds require planting in a protected place and transplanting and thinning. Some seeds are more trouble than others. The seeds that are super small or those that take months to mature from seed call for a gardener with a lot of patience. Choosing to use some seed in your garden will most likely add quite a bit more variety to what you have in your plot.
