Looking for a perennial you can buy, plant and virtually forget? It might be that one of the sedums is just what you are looking for. Sedum is the name for a large genus of plants many call “stonecrops.” There are about 400 species to choose from. Some of the sedums like hot weather while some prefer cold. Some are yellowish in color while some are green or other colors. Some creep along the ground and quickly fill an area.

Ever since I purchased a new Vista-64 computer several years ago, I have enjoyed using several of Microsoft’s desktop gadgets and Yahoo’s desktop widgets. In recent years, I have written several columns extolling the joys of widgets and gadgets, and telling where to find them. Widgets and gadgets are small utilities that can be placed on a Windows or Mac desktop and provide the user with current information of some kind. Yahoo offered more than 6,000 free widgets, and Microsoft offered thousands of gadgets.

Sometimes the fishing situation is not exactly as one would believe. By exactly, I mean the action is not always limited to the crack of dawn or dusk. Sometimes during the summertime, there is some hot action during midday.

The Coastal Conservation Association STAR tourney, which runs through Sept. 3, is getting a lot of attention from Southeast Texas fishermen. One of the most coveted spots on the leader board is held by Sour Lake angler Michael Fesco. He’s leading in the speckled trout category with an 8 pound, 10 ounce trout caught on Sabine Lake with live bait. That’s the heaviest trout to be entered into the STAR in the upper coast division.

Listening to pundits and some Republican advocates, I keep hearing the opinion that big money authorized by the Citizens United Supreme Court decision will not really make a difference in politics. When I hear this, I am reminded of a common saying I’ve heard for many years: “Money talks and BS walks.”
