From time to time, folks have asked what my favorite type of hunting is. Such a question does require some deep thinking. The only hunting that I did not enjoy was when I was first taken out snipe hunting at night.

Coming back to reality, I have always had wing shooting with ducks, geese and doves at the top of the list. Even quail and jacksnipe are great challenges, but at the very top is duck hunting.

The water temperature on Sabine Lake this past Monday was 69 degrees, and with this week’s cold front lowering temperatures into the 40s, it is a sure bet that water temps will drop at least a few more degrees. That’s going to give flounder fishing on Sabine Lake and in East Galveston Bay a big-time bump. The run on Sabine has been pretty darned good the past couple of weeks, but I can guarantee you it’s going to be red hot for at least the next week to 10 days.

We gardeners might know some plants. Some gardeners know about lots of plants and can impress you with not only names but details about hundreds of species and gardening options. But all of us do come to rely on the plant tag at a garden center for information. Most of us check the tag before we buy. Sometimes we wonder how reliable this information is. We can probably believe most of it.

The good old days probably mean many different things to different people. I find myself remarking more and more about them when I think of certain, places, people or events. My old pastor used to say he did not long for the good ole days, as some said they did. He said he did not miss hot houses, no air conditioning to sleep in at night, plowing a mule through a dusty field, having to grow everything his family ate, or traveling by horse and buggy, and to him, those were memories of the good old days.

An old tradition on Thanksgiving morning in my extended family has been to gather around a fat newspaper loaded with Black Friday ads and plot and conspire about where and when to go to get the bargains. It is only relatively recent history that stores started Black Friday at a minute after midnight or at four in the morning; prior to these insane opening times, most major stores opened at seven or eight a.m., a more civilized time to commence the fray.
