We’re just a couple of weeks away from the opening of dove seasons across Texas, and that is going to be followed up by the mid-September teal season, with the bow season on deer the first week of October. It’ll all be here before you know it, and right now is the right time to start getting ready for bird hunts. It all starts with getting your new hunting and fishing license, which is on sale right now.

All current Texas hunting and fishing licenses expire Aug. 31.

If news reports concerning the past regular session and the special session are accurate, it could be that our state senate is losing not only its independence, but also its credibility. It seems from outside appearance it is becoming more of a rubber stamp for the desires of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Gov. Greg Abbott.

From many years of observation as well as my years in the Senate, I know the Senate was once fiercely independent and jealous of any erosion of senatorial power or political stroke. In recent sessions, it seems this tradition of the Senate has faded away.

Russian Blue? Maybe! Meet little Jazz. No, he’s not the newest drink, but we believe he may be a Russian Blue mix. Jazz was found wandering around the shelter entrance early one morning. Naturally, they took him in, and he is the friendliest, happiest, sweetest guy ever! He is so full of jazz, thus his name! Jazz is 4-6 months old, weighs 4 pounds and has been neutered. He’s ready to go to his new home! Adoption fee is $90, which covers his neuter, vaccines, worming and flea treatment. Jazz can be seen at Beaumont Animal Care, 1884 Pine St., ID No. 30840.

Q. I was told that Texas now allows me to have a special type of deed that transfers title to my home after my death without probate. Is this true? What is it called?

A. As of September 1, 2015, Texas allows an owner of real property to transfer the property to his or her beneficiaries by executing what is called a Transfer On Death (TOD) deed. This type of deed effectively avoids the need for probate to transfer the title to real property after death. Homeowners can now transfer real property after death without incurring legal fees or court costs.
