As we continue to celebrate “Black History Month” each February, it is important that this not just be a date on the calendar but that it contributes to the changing of our future by making us aware of our past.

February has been being celebrated as Black History Month since 1926. 

Bitterness, hatred, prejudice, anger and bigotry affect the physical health as much as they poison the soul of men and women. The improvement of the mental, spiritual and emotional health of a nation will improve the health of the members of that society.

In 2016, a group of physicians proposed a “Single-Payer Health Care Reform,” drafted by a 39-member working group and published in the June 2016 American Journal of Public Health. It has been endorsed by over 2,525 physicians and over 186 medical students but the numbers have not been updated in 18 months.

For those who were born before the mid-20th Century (1950), the approaching of 2018 brings us closer and closer to the mid-21st Century and only seven years until the quarter-of-a-century mark. It seems like yesterday that the Y2K scare was at the top of our “worry list.” How, those of us “historically” minded, often think in terms of anticipated events expected within the next 20 years and wonder how many of those events we will personally experience.

In 2009, the New York Times published an extensive article that promoted the rationing of healthcare as the only way to manage future costs. Subsequent letters to the editor responded positively and negatively to the article written by Peter Singer of Princeton University, Previously, Singer wrote a letter to the 1985 Journal of Pediatrics in which he argued that a pig might have greater value than a human child who was born with severe birth defects.
