Not a glamorous subject, but one close to the hearts of any true gardener is fertilizer. When should we “feed the soil”? When should we give a boost to those struggling vegetables in the garden?

There are so many varieties of the poppy flower, and they are all gorgeous. This brightly flowering plant has huge blooms in red, pink, yellow, purple and shades in between. Most readily available in local nurseries seems to be the Oriental poppy and the California poppy.

Some of the most popular annual bedding plants used by gardeners are impatiens. They are ideal for growing where you want color in your yard but you have lots of shade. There are so many types and colors of traditional impatiens. The eye-catching variegated white blooming Painted Paradise White is just stunning, as are the double-bloomed varieties.

Put on your sunglasses, pack that checkbook, find a notepad and head on over to Tyrrell Park on Saturday, April 14, for a great day for gardeners. The fun starts at 8 a.m. and lasts until noon. The Thyme for Herbs Society is planning its popular event, Herb Fest, in conjunction with the Beaumont Botanical Gardens at Tyrrell Park. Admission to the Warren Loose Conservatory is also free during this time.
