Each year during Oscar season, a lot of movies and actors bubble up for consideration, but only a few are actually nominated. It’s not that these “almost nominees” weren’t worthy; it’s just that something else was a little bit better. Many of these films are just now out on DVD and are worth noting since none of them played in the Beaumont area. Judge for yourself if any of these performances and/or films should have received nominations.

This feature seems an odd choice for director Joe Wright. His previous films have been lush period pieces such as “Atonement” and “Pride and Prejudice.” This modern day thriller about a teenage assassin seems a stretch, but Wright brings a fresh perspective to the genre and proves he can step outside his comfort zone.

So what exactly is the source code? As one character relates, “it would take weeks to explain,” and time is something in short supply in this movie. On a morning commuter train traveling into Chicago, Capt. Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) jolts up from a little snooze to find he doesn’t know where he is. His seatmate, Christina (Michelle Monaghan), keeps calling him Sean and his reflection in the train’s window reveals a different face.

As temperatures climb so do expectations for the summer movie season. With only so many weekend opening slots available, studios keep pushing into May to get their movies out in front of the glut of pictures moving into theaters in June and July.
