Like a car limping along on under-inflated tires, this gets to where it’s going, but the ride is pretty bumpy. Revisiting the Portokalos family was probably a better idea on paper than it actually is on screen. Back in 2002, the original movie written by its star, Nia Vardalos, was a phenomenal hit with its fish-out-of-water cross culture story.

It’s not saying much when the best movie I’ve seen so far in 2016 is “Deadpool”—and that was weeks ago. What was more memorable than the show was the theater itself. The new iPic theater in Houston is one amazing place, beginning with the seats. Not seats really, more like your own personal lounger complete with pillow and blanket. But it doesn’t come cheap.

Now that 2015 movies are moving aside for the 2016 slate, there are some that shouldn’t be lost in the shuffle. Most of these received very little attention or screen time, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be seen.

Taken from journalist Kim Barker’s lively account of covering the war in Afghanistan, this walks the line between comedy and drama somewhat clumsily, with comedian Tina Fey in the lead role. Kim Baker (name altered slightly for the movie version) isn’t as desperate as, say …. Elizabeth Gilbert when she wrote “Eat, Pray, Love,” but the trajectory is pretty much the same.
