One of the great things about living in Texas is that there is always something to hunt or catch on any given day. For bow and gun hunters, taking a pig is one surefire way to add a little excitement to an otherwise boring summer.

Last year, the U.S. Coast Guard counted 4,064 accidents that involved 610 deaths, 2,678 injuries and about $39 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed, and alcohol use rank as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents. Topping the list is running a boat while intoxicated. Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.

Lumberton’s Phil Brannan just returned from the World Fish Carving Competition held in Springfield, Mo., and won two out of three World Titles. His carvings of an alligator gar and rainbow trout won Best in World for decorative miniature and natural finish.

This competition centers on the world’s best in taxidermy and fish carving.
