Thursday, Oct. 22, at Golden Triangle Power Sports, beginning at 6 p.m., Miranda Lambert’s Muttnation Foundation will be special guests at “Paw-ty For a Purr-pose” And that “purr-pose” is to raise funds for a new animal shelter facility for the Humane Society of Southeast Texas.

Honorary chairs of the capital campaign Walter and Sheila Umphrey visited the shelter several years ago and were saddened by the crumbling condition of the 45-year-old building.

“The Humane Society provides shelter for more lost, abandoned and abused pets than any other animal welfare organization in the Golden Triangle. They also provide many animal-related services, including low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and humane education programs. The facility is stretched thin as the demand for services continues to increase. The community needs a new and improved shelter,” said Sheila Umphrey.

The Umphreys made a generous donation to get the fundraising started and another generous donor gifted the Humane Society with land on which to build the new facility, which will include an education center, open-air pavilion, and the adoption center, along with walking trails and dog parks.

Attendees at the “Paw-ty For a Purr-pose” private gala will enjoy the music of the Royal Dukes Band, southern barbeque catered by Courville’s, libations from Del Papa Distributing, and a live auction. The design of the new shelter will be revealed and, as mentioned, representatives from  Miranda Lambert’s Muttnation Foundation will be in attendance as special guests.

Jeannie and Leldon Sweet are hosting this fundraising event in the memory of, as Jeannie says, “the best little lady ever, our Piper Echo. Piper shaped our lives – and our hearts. She will forever own a special, large piece of our hearts. Our grief, no matter how powerful it is, cannot begin to equal the love and joy Piper gave us each and every day of her 16-year life. She exemplified unconditional love, in its purest form, a trait to which we should all aspire. She lifted our spirits each day, and by hosting this event we hope that we will be able to help lift the spirit of many shelter dogs and cats in the future.”
