Local museums get ready for Museum Day Live! participation

McFaddin-Ward House

Four area museums are participating in Smithsonian Magazine’s program Museum Day Live! The W.H Stark House and the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, the Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur, and the McFaddin-Ward House in Beaumont are offering free admission for two on Saturday, Sept. 29, to anyone with a complimentary ticket from Smithsonian Magazine’s website.

Curator Ami Camara of the Museum of the Gulf Coast said she feels Museum Day Live! encourages people to take an active interest in museums and their impact.

“We offer free admission,” Camara said. “This gives people the opportunity to come in and see the exhibits on their own time. This is a nationwide event, and I think it is important to participate and raise awareness about museums and what they do for the community, especially when the government is always trying to cut funding for museums.”

Becky Fertitta, volunteer coordinator and visitors’ center manager for the McFaddin-Ward House in Beaumont, said she and her volunteers are excited about the event,

“We never mind doing something special like this,” Fertitta said. “There is no admission. We hope to have a good turnout this year. The date happens to coincide with a day our junior interpreters are volunteering. They are teenagers from around the area, 13 years old and older, who volunteer to give tours and interpret the museum, its history and the history of the (McFaddin-Ward) family. The kids are excited to do this.”

“We at the Stark Museum believe it is important to participate in Museum Day Live! as a way of emphasizing how museums offer opportunities for life-long learning and enjoyment,” said Sarah Boehme, director at the Stark Museum of Art in Orange. “This year we are pleased to present a gallery talk on one of the most well-known of American artists, Georgia O’Keeffe.”

Patsy Herrington, director of The W.H. Stark House said Museum Day Live! gives everyone a chance to tour the site.

“For those that have never been to the house or have not done so recently, this is a great opportunity to tour this historic home,” Herrington said.
