The first-generation Toyota Highlander pioneered the midsize crossover utility vehicle segment, ushering in comfort and fuel efficiency with SUV-like roominess and versatility. The current, second-generation Highlander amplifies those attributes.

For 2013, Toyota Highlander is available in four grades: Highlander (MSRP $29,020), new Highlander Plus (MSRP $30,475), SE (MSRP $34,560) and Limited (MSRP $37,950).

Performance and efficiency

The Toyota Highlander offers two engines. A 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, standard for Highlander and Highlander Plus, produces 187 horsepower and 186 foot-pounds of torque and offers an EPA-estimated 25 mpg rating in highway driving and 20 mpg in city driving. The 2.7-liter engine is teamed with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

The available 3.5-liter V6 (standard on SE and Limited) produces 270 horsepower and 248 foot-pounds of torque. The fuel economy rating is 24 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg in the city for 2WD models and 22 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in the city for 4WD models.

Highlander, SE and Highlander Plus grades are equipped with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, and the Limited features standard 19-inch alloy wheels.

Exterior design

Designed at Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif., the second-generation Highlander conveys a contemporary, dynamic presence via clean, sculpted lines. The Highlander grade stands out with its six-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, color-keyed power outside mirrors, and silver-painted front grille.

The Highlander Limited has a luxurious appearance with 19-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, puddle lamps and rear spoiler. The Highlander Limited also features Limited badging on the front doors.

The top of the line Toyota Highlander Limited grade offers three-zone automatic climate control with rear vents for second- and third-row seats, leather-trimmed seating, and wood-grain style accents.
