Art, gardening and birding come together at AMSET

Beautiful blooms … The Magnolia Garden Club will host a flower and horticulture show with the theme “Birds & Blooms” at The Art Museum of Southeast Texas from April 5-6. The show is open to the public from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, and 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6. Admission is free. The show will be held in conjunction with the AMSET exhibit Birds in Art, artwork featuring birds in various media taken from a national juried competition at the Woodson Art Museum. The horticulture division will feature more than 50 varieties of flora indigenous to this area, in addition to a new flora category featuring fairy gardens. Floral design, botanical embellishment and photography will also be staged. Scheduled lecture “Giving Birds Back Their Wings,” a short history of bird conservation, will be presented at 2 p.m. April 5 in the museum’s lecture hall complete with several of the Houston Audubon Society’s raptors to illustrate bird conservation first-hand. The Magnolia Garden Club is a member of The Garden Club of America.

Yummy food … St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica 14th annual St. Joseph’s Day Spaghetti Lunch will be held Friday, March 18. The menu includes traditional pasta Milanese, Rich Courville’s fried fish, traditional Italian vegetable including Mamie Fertitta’s now famous artichoke and green bean casserole, along with Lucille LeBlanc’s cabbage fritters, bread and dessert. From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., dine-in and to-go lunches will be served for a $12 donation per meal.

Perfection … The first party of the Neches River Festival 2016 festivities took place at the home of Melody and Pat Parsons as four lovely young princesses, Amy Moncla, Jorden Starnes, Stephanie Rojas and Jayden Dupuis, were honored by the Jefferson County Bar Association Auxiliary. NRF princesses and their mothers arrived around 2 p.m. and enjoyed a scrumptious spread and visits with each other around the beautiful patio and gardens of the hosts.

Beaching b-day … Last weekend, longtime pals Rachael Roane, Carol Ann Glasscock, Judy Farrell, Ann Clary Old, Jennifer Gordy and Lynne Ohmstede partied at the beach for Lysle Shaw’s fab 50th in Katherine Brady’s beautiful beachienda. Walks, conversation catch-up, a few libations and fantastic food were all part of the weekend festivities.
