In the Dark: You've gotta be crazy to film a movie on an iPhone

Claire Foy in Seven Soderbergh's Unsane

Starring: Claire Foy, Jay Pharoah

Directed by: Steven Soderbergh

Rated: R

As a cinematic experiment, this feature is pretty interesting. It was director Steven Soderbergh’s choice to film the entire movie on an iPhone. And it’s obvious that the usual technical aspects we barely notice most of the time are missing here.

We barely notice them because if they’re done correctly, things like lighting and sound all work together for the total image. Here, star Claire Foy (who is in almost every scene) is poorly lit, and there are several scenes where the dialog truly does sound like it’s coming from a smart phone. On some level, it works for rather than against the movie considering these scenes are filmed in a mental care facility in a padded cell where the central character finds herself after unknowingly voluntarily committing herself for a seven-day observation.
