Fiat 124 Spider returns to the United States

Fiat 124 Spider

Last sold in the United States more than 30 years ago, the iconic Fiat 124 Spider is back for 2017.

Nearly 50 years ago, on Nov. 2, 1966, the original Fiat 124 Spider was introduced at the Turin Auto Show. Spider sales in the U.S. began in 1968 and concluded in 1985.

Today, the all-new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider with it classic Italian styling and starting MSRP of $24,995 is available in three models: Classica, Lusso and Abarth.

Italian style

Designed at Centro Stile in Turin, Italy, the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider borrows cues from the original Spider and reinterprets them for today. For example, the exterior includes a classic style and a sleek silhouette. Features like the hexagonal upper grille and grille pattern call to mind the historic Spider.

Inside, the interior is crafted with soft-touch materials throughout. Interior color schemes vary. Abarth models feature leatherette and microfiber seats with red accent stitching, but Abarth models are available in three other optional color schemes: Black Leather, Black/Red Leather or Black Leather/Alcantara Recaro. Additionally, Lusso models are dressed in either Black or Saddle leather-trimmed seats, while Classica models features Black cloth seats.

Interior trim accents are in the following colors: Silver (Classica), Piano Black (Lusso) and Matte Gray (Abarth).

Outside, seven exterior paint colors are available, including hues such as Rosso Passione (Red Clear Coat), Bianco Gelato (White Clear Coat), Nero Cinema (Jet Black Metallic), Grigio Argento (Gray Metallic), Grigio Moda (Dark Gray Metallic), and tri-coat Bianco Perla (Crystal White Pearl).

Under the hood

The Fiat 124 Spider comes standard with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine. This engine delivers 160 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque on Classica and Lusso models, 164 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque on Abarth models, and is available with a six-speed manual transmission (26 mpg city/35 mpg highway) or a six-speed automatic transmission (25 mpg city/36 mpg highway).
