Gigantic garage sale to benefit local charities

Thrifty fanatics all over Southeast Texas will be in for a treat on Thursday, July 17, when Trinity United Methodist Church at 3430 Harrison Ave. in Beaumont opens the doors for their annual garage sale at 8 a.m.

For more than 20 years, Trinity Methodist Church has been able to give back to the community by donating proceeds of the sale to local charities. Because of generous Southeast Texans, last year’s garage sale raised more than $30,000 to assist organizations such as Boys’ Haven, Girls’ Haven, Garth House, among many others.

This year, the garage sale proceeds will be distributed to The Garth House, Southeast Texas Food Bank, the Shorkey Center, Some Other Place, and The Women’s and Children’s Shelter.

“This year we are focused on helping organizations that help families in distress in this area,” said Lisa LaFosse, member of Trinity United Methodist Church and garage sale committee volunteer. “After the committee decided on helping families, we talked to different organizations in our area and chose these five.”

The church has been collecting thousands of boxes of clothes, shoes, electronics and all sorts of trinkets from the community since the last sale and is still accepting items.

More than 120 volunteers take part in the annual sale. They do everything from sorting and organizing several large warehouses full of treasures to assisting customers at the church during the sale and even cleaning up after the three-day extravaganza.

This is no ordinary garage sale, organizers say. With a massive amount of inventory the church has acquired, several departments have been created in order to make shopping an enjoyable experience.

“We have women’s, men’s children’s, jewelry and electronics departments,” said Clifford Hughes, garage sale board chairman. “We have more departments and even have a large tent outside that we put the all furniture in.”

Doors will be open from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. on July 17 and 18, and 8-11 a.m. on July 19. The show will go on rain or shine.

“The event is indoors, except for the furniture tent outside,” said J.T. Robertson, director of communications. “Even the walkway is covered to keep customers dry!”
