Miss Mardi Gras Scholarship Pageant of Southeast Texas 2017
Miss Mardi Gras of SETX hosted its second annual Scholarship Pageant on Feb. 11 in Beaumont at the Holiday Inn & Suites off of Walden Road. The pageant started in 2016 with Mardi Gras of SETX Inc.
There were seven age groups from 2 years old to 18. The 16-to-18-year-old contestants are interviewed, have a casual wear outfit session, and the beauty wear. The Scholarship Pageant awards a $1,000 scholarship in the Miss division.
Last year the pageant had 25 contestants; this year, it grew to 45 participants. Directors Desirae King, Tahlia Beagle and Navia Thompson hope the pageant gets bigger and better and that the community will partner with them to award a larger scholarship in the Miss division.
Titleholders for Miss Mardi Gras Scholarship Pageant do community service for the Special Angel Rodeo for the disabled, and with the MDA Fill the Boot campaign. They also do a fundraiser for the less fortunate during Christmas and Thanksgiving.
“We’ve always wanted to be a part of the Mardi Gras,” said King. “It’s a good thing for Southeast Texas to be involved in. We want to get the kids involved in the festivities and the parade. We want it to grow.”
