Volunteers the lifeblood of OCP
Orange Community Players’ circle of life has always revolved around its talented and committed volunteers like Julie McDaniel, who has volunteered with OCP for the last six years. McDaniel helps with props, paints the marquee to help advertise productions or as McDaniel says does “whatever they need,” which includes hairdos.
“I’m a hairdresser by trade, but I enjoy painting,” McDaniel says. “When we did Cinderella, it was a huge production. I did their updos and zipped them and snapped them. I’ve had to make costumes before. I do a little sewing, too. Whatever it takes.”
McDaniel said for OCP’s latest production, the 10th Annual Fun for Funds: An Animated Musical Review, she will mostly decorate the lobby and paint the marquee.
“A lot of times they’ll decorate the lobby to go with their themes,” she said.
Rico Vasquez, the show’s director and member of the OCP Board of Directors, said volunteers like McDaniel are what keep OCP’s circle of life going.
“Julie does a lot of stuff behind the scenes,” Vasquez said. “Not only is she creating the marquee, which grabs people attention as they walk by, she also is decorating the lobby. The first thing that people see when they walk in to see the show is what she’s done — her hard work. She is our first impression.”
