As the Lutcher Theater prepares for the 2017-18 season, the Lutcher Theater Service Guild is seeking individuals interested in volunteering their time and talents to help promote and support the arts and the Lutcher.

This season’s membership drive is to be held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 5:30 p.m. in the Lutcher Theater’s third-floor lobby. The drive is open to the public and all are invited to participate in a theater tour, orientation and dinner.

Meet Dixon, a male terrier/hound mix who weighs about 25 pounds. Dixon is 6-8 months old and has been at the shelter since July 5. He is a happy, fun-loving dog who loves to play and gets along with other dogs. Beaumont Animal Care anticipates he is going to be a medium-size dog topping out at about 30-40 pounds. The annual Cops & Kids Carnival is coming back to Beaumont on Aug. 26. Drawing in thousands each year, the fun and free fair features games, rides, food and other attractions while offering youth and law enforcement officers an opportunity to get to know one another in a safe, festive environment.

With the summer movie season halfway over, it’s time to look ahead. The temperature won’t move much through September and October, but the tone of movies will as the season moves away from the blockbusters and raunchy comedies to more dramas and serious fare with Oscar contenders competing for audience attention. A quick look reveals one trend toward horror films — not the usual stuff, but more psychological horror stories, with some major players.

United Way of Beaumont & North Jefferson County distributed nearly $2 million among 19 local partner agencies at an allocation award ceremony Tuesday, July 18, at the Foundation for Southeast Texas.

The money, raised during United Way’s annual campaign, comes from donors, individuals who live and work in the community, as well as corporate donors, said John Rollins, public relations/community impact director for the United Way of Beaumont & North Jefferson County.

Aug. 16, 1892, the Gladys City Oil, Gas, and Manufacturing Company was incorporated. Eight days later, on Aug. 24, 1892, it was chartered by the state of Texas. Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum will honor this occasion with cake and a gusher Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. The gusher will blow at noon. Cake will be served while supplies last.

The blacksmith will be working in the Southern Carriage Works from 10 a.m. to noon. In lieu of admissions, donations will be accepted. Last admission is at 4:20 p.m. and the store will close at 4:30 p.m.

Parker is a beautiful male German shepherd mix weighing in at 52 pounds. Parker is a young dog at about 1-2 years old. He has a beautiful coat with chestnut, rust and amber hues, and just look at those eyes! Parker is friendly, very active and loves people. He is young enough to respond to structured training and can be easily taught proper doggie manners! Parker will need a large fenced yard to play and expel his energy.
