Annie's Mailbox

Dear Annie:

I have three dogs. I love them and treat them well. In turn, I expect and receive good behavior. And I wish people wouldn’t assume that just because I have dogs, it’s fine for them to bring their dogs over when they come by my house.

I have had people bring dogs that have peed on my dogs’ beds, on walls, on a wicker chest. One even pooped in a bedroom. They have chewed and destroyed my dogs’ toys, too.

Q. I have not had this arise, but I am still curious. Can a store demand to see a photo ID when I pay with a credit card? Some places ask, and many do not.

A. Until recently, the only law that controlled whether a store could ask for a photo ID from a customer was the contract between the credit card issuer and the merchant. For most credit cards, this contract prohibits asking for an ID if the card is signed. If the card is unsigned, the merchant has the right to demand to see a photo ID. Here is what each credit company contract says:

History is filled with the accounts of attempts to meld religion and government, and the subsequent wars. Lessons are to be learned from the crusades and the Spanish Inquisition. We should remember why the pilgrims left England and came to America. Kings tried to mandate the choice of religions for hundreds of years. And there are those today who would have the U.S. government do the same thing.

Remnants of pink and teal confetti are all that’s visibly left of the Gift of Life fundraising walk held Oct. 7 in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual event that not only raises awareness of deadly cancers but also serves as a celebration of life for those who have overcome breast and ovarian cancer.

And although the event only runs one day of the year, the life-saving services funded by events such as the Gift of Life walk are in need year-round.

Several Los Angeles police officers, prompted by news coverage of Hurricane Harvey and the flooding in Houston, banded together and ended up in Southeast Texas.

“This really started with me watching the news and then seeing what was happening out here in Houston,” Capt. Jonathan Tom explained. “We saw that poor sergeant who died in the line of duty,” referring to Houston PD’s Sgt. Steve Perez found drowned Aug. 29.

Tom is the commanding officer of LAPD’s south traffic division with 130 officers working under him.

Q. I live in an apartment. I pay my rent on time and I am a good tenant. Recently, a small fire from the next-door unit burned part of my apartment and damaged my property. The apartment owner says he is not responsible for the damage to my property. What can I do? I do not have renter’s insurance.
