A friend sent this to me to share and I loved it. I remember once in third grade saving my lunch money and getting some help from my own Mama Cole and Aunt Anna and buying clothes and shoes for a girl in my class, Lillian, who lived on the wrong side of the tracks in the little mill village. She had so little and what she had was divided between six brothers and sisters. Lillian grew up to be a good, responsible adult and never forgot the little gift of love that Santa made happen.I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid.

December is a great month for gardening in our area — in a way. Unlike in areas where the climate means soil is covered in snow, here we can still go outside and get a lot done.

One major problem detecting and neutralizing much of the current crop of malware is that the malware very effectively protects itself from detection and removal by many of the more traditional security methods. Since many of today’s most prevalent PC security threats load when the computer is booted and often involve a rootkit, common security software may either be unable to detect the malware or may actually be deactivated by that malware but still appear to be running normally.

Q. I did a small construction job and was paid with a check after I completed the work. I deposited the check in my account, but it was returned because the person who gave me the check stopped payment. I went to his bank and they said it was not their problem. How do I get paid? Why doesn’t his bank owe me the money?

As many of you already know, I occasionally volunteer to teach computer classes at the Best Years Senior Center. Seniors probably make up the largest group of new computer users, as many had lived their entire lives without utilizing many of the current technologies.

Q. I was playing ball in the front yard with my dog, when she suddenly ran into the street in front of our house. A passing car struck her. Fortunately, my dog was not hurt. The accident, however, did cause some minor damage to the car. Am I responsible for the cost of repairs for the car? The owner expects me to pay.

Recently I was researching some technical information on a Brazilian manufactured product. There was a dearth of information available on English language Web sites, but there were dozens of Brazilian Web sites that contained my search term. I do not read Portuguese, so I had to translate the content of the Brazilian Web pages into English in order to determine if they contained the content that I needed.

Q. I received a gift for the holidays. When I opened it, I discovered I had already bought the same thing for myself. I went to return it and the store pointed to a sign that said, “No returns, exchange only,” and told me I could not return it. There is nothing else I want in that store. Are they right? This doesn’t seem fair.

The spirit of giving is falling upon us as the holiday season is finally in sight. It’s the time for spending quality hours with loved ones, both friends and family, enjoying hearty meals and seasonal treats (and the process of preparing them), dragging decorations and lights from the attic to adorn the Christmas tree and home, and last but not least, spending hours scurrying to the perfect gift for said loved ones.
